The Best Winter Warmer Snacks To Fuel The Kids
Winter. That’s code for rain, hungry tummies and sports fields/courts, right?
Yep, winter means getting outdoors in weather that seems less than ideal. But, for really good reasons.
You’d be forgiven for dreaming about cosy socks, practical rain jackets, gumboots and winter warmers!
With the cold weather setting in and winter sports starting, we’re starting to think about warm, cosy food that nourishes and warms us all up.
Whether it’s for school lunches, healthy winter snacks, or grab and go snacks to take to sports, we’ve got you covered with our favourite winter warmer snack ideas that are perfect for fuelling the kids.
1: Overnight Oats
There is nothing more filling on a cold morning than a bowl of oats!
Grab and go cold, or heat them up before you head out the door (if heating them up stir through a little bit more liquid before you microwave them) and there will be full tummies until lunchtime.
If you haven’t made overnight oats before, the premise is really simple. Pop some oats, liquid and fruits in a jar and leave it in the fridge overnight for the flavours to mesh and the oats to soften. They are delicious and nutritious! If you don't have a tried and true recipe, try these winter-inspired overnight oat recipes or these for something a bit quicker.
Don’t like refrigerator oats and have a bit of time in the morning? Make porridge on the stove and put it in our insulated jars before you head out. If you’re bored of plain old porridge, try this carrot cake porridge which is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
2: Smoothies
If you’ve ever read any of our blogs before, you will know that we love smoothies here at All Natural Mums. And with good reason! A tried and true favourite, smoothies are a great way to eat on the go AND get some extra nutrients into your family's diet.
Smoothies don’t only have to be a summer drink. If you find them too cold in the winter, try using room temperature ingredients rather than frozen, and add warming spices like cinnamon and ginger.
Take smoothies on the go with our range of smoothie cups or slip some extra goodness in with our smoothie bombs.
3: Breakfast Muffins
Muffins are delicious at any time of the day, so why not make a big batch for breakfasts?
The perfect grab and go for those early Saturday morning games and last-minute breakfasts (or lunches!). These muffins can be made sweet or savoury depending on taste. If you’re at home, they’re delicious heated up!
If you’re taking them out with you, our snack boxes are a perfect size for muffins. And if you want a warm muffin on the go, put a heated one into our insulated food jars and it will still be toasty warm hours later. Just remember to pop a paper towel in with the muffin so it doesn’t go soggy.
4: Yoghurt And Fruit
There is something about yoghurt that kids just love! So, you can never go wrong with simple fruit and yoghurt in an insulated jar. Kept cool and fresh to chow down on when snack time rolls around.
When it comes to winter, it can sometimes be hard to find tasty fresh fruit to top your yoghurt with. Luckily, we have solutions!
Try stewed apples with cinnamon, use frozen berries to make a compote, or save time wit
h a low-sug ar jam or some honey. Our
snack pack is the perfect size to take your yoghurt concoction out and about (and you’ll never forget to bring a spoon!)
5: Purees & Dips
Kids of all ages (even those of us in the 30+ bracket!) love a good dipping situation. So, why not take your dip to go?
If you’ve got a young one, our snack pack has a non-slip base which is perfect for preventing spills. Both sides seal separately, so you can have sweet and savoury in the same container without them ever touching.
This also makes them great for dipping combos. Think dips, carrots and hummus, or cheese and crackers.
6: Soups
Soups are the ultimate winter warmers, and there are so many easy soup recipes that you can make at home. Get the kids involved on the weekends or in the school holidays with prep and blending!
The best thing about soup (apart from that toasty feeling of the warm liquid hitting your tummy) is the variety of flavours. There is something to suit every tastebud. Get some veggies in with this winter carrot soup or give one of these soup recipes a try.
Soups make a great winter school lunch or snack after winter sports. Keep soups warm and avoid leaks with our insulated food jars, perfect for lunches or to pop in the car.
7: Trail Mix
Trail mix is another one of those snacks that comes with a great variety of flavour options. Here are some of our favourite combos:
- For when you need a little taste of summer, try cashews, brazil nuts, dried mango, coconut flakes and banana chips
- Mix almonds, dried cherries, dark chocolate chips, sea salt and cinnamon
- Need to go nut-free? Try pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, shredded coconut and freeze-dried berries
The real perk of trail mix is how transportable it is. Grab some snack bags or pop it in one compartment of a snack box and you’re good to go!
